The Geometry of Violence: How Street Fighter II Taught an Industry to Think in Frames

"A visual grammar of hitboxes, startup frames, and active windows that every competitive player still reads fluently today."

Mortal Kombat II

5/5 Quarters

"Every character has a reason to exist. Every matchup has an argument."

Galaga

5/5 Quarters

"The only game where getting captured is a viable strategy."

Forty-five years later, the dual-ship mechanic is still the smartest risk/reward design in the fixed shooter genre. Letting the enemy capture your fighter and then reclaiming it for double firepower is a masterclass in teaching players to lose deliberately.

Ridge Racer

4/5 Quarters

"Fantasy physics executed with complete conviction."

The drift model is pure fantasy and it knows it. Ridge Racer never pretended to simulate driving — it simulated the feeling of driving in a film about driving. That distinction is what makes it still playable in 2026 when its contemporaries feel like archaeology.
